We call up Dan Baumann to get his perspective on fear and uncertainty. We all feel as though we are in prison right now with lockdowns and limitations, and who better than Dan Baumann to give us some perspective after being imprisoned in Iran for 9 weeks.
While in prison in Iran, Dan had many days of feeling like he had no freedom or control of his life. The door was locked and he wasn’t getting out. He had no idea how long he’d be there. Perhaps it’d be forever.
After a life threatening cliff fall while hiking in Hawaii. He had many negative diagnoses like, you’ll never walk or have full function of your body again. In rehab, he was told he’d be there a minimum of 9 months.
He had NO hope in both situations. He had to find something more real than his situation. He realized he had to seek God and be in his Word to find the “more real” thing to anchor himself in.
Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Consider him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.Hebrews 12:1-3
In both instances of Dan’s life, he decided inside of himself that he should continue to worship God and look to Him. He knew if he could get his mind off of himself and his situation and on to God, it would bring the peace and hope he needed to get through.
His path was not perfect and he had moments of choosing fear, but the more he looked to God, the more he found joy and hope.
What Satan wants us to go after is plant doubt and questions about the nature and character of God. By God’s grace, Dan was able to deny those attacks and continue to look to God.
May this be a reminder and challenge for us to decide in our hearts to focus on God during these times.
